How can I safely Spring clean birds?

I have budgies, 20 of them, and they are not easily transported somewhere else or even moved outside. How can I safely clean my home without putting them in danger? What products can I use?

  • They need to be bathed regularly! Not just seasonly. Call your bird vet.

Mine get a bath daily. I just put them in the bathtub with an inch of water.

I have a house full of pets too. Call your bird vet. Birds can't take strong odors or toxic chemicals. I use vinegar, baking soda, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide. Typically almost anything in an aerosol can is off limits. Look for organic products and read labels carefully. I place mine in my bedroom where I can close the door. Clean the rest of my house, let it air out with the windows and doors open, put them back, then clean my bedroom last. My house is small and what works best for me. In spring, summer and fall I can just put them outside in the shade.

Am I right in thinking you want to clean your home with products that won't hurt the birds? Look for organic products not harmful to pets, and avoid aerosols that they might inhale. Can you cover their cages or living spaces to protect them? Most surfaces can be cleaned with water, vinegar, and baking soda.

The main problem with birds and cleaning is the odor of cleaners, room sprays and perfumes. Move the birds cages to a room where you can close the door, like a bathroom or a bedroom away from the room you are cleaning. Once the odor has dissipated in the room you have cleaned you can move them back. We have a blue and gold macaw and also two pairs of finches. I have had cockatiels and conures killed by people spraying perfume to close or even just walking by right after a liberal praying. If you can get cleaning supplies that are not perfumed you are good, but anything with a chemical smell can be taken in by them. Your best bet is to move them away from where you are cleaning to where you can't smell it anymore and close a door just to be safe.
