Keeping Berries Fresh for a Week or More!

This tip works for all produce, not just Strawberries or other berries. Try it with lettuce and other greens, mushrooms, squash, herbs you name it- it works! All without any vinegar!
All you need are glass jars with tight sealing lids, and your produce. That's it!! I promise! This is EASY!
Now, don't wash the produce first. Just put it in the jar, stems and all. Washing it destroys the natural antibodies that help to keep your produce fresh!

Of course, remove any berries or parts that are starting to mold already, or that have soggy spots. You'll want to eat those or toss them.

Put the lid on tight, and put the jars right into your fridge. When you're ready to eat your crisp and fresh produce, take out what you need, and return the rest to the fridge!

Why and how does this work? I don't know, but it's Kitchen Magic for sure! I believe that's it has something to do with the humidity being at the perfect level. And you will be amazed how long you can keep things for. Strawberries generally last for at least a week, but I have kept some as long as 10 days. I usually get 5 days with Raspberries (unheard of, right??) and about 3 weeks with Blueberries! Blackberries will last for at least a week. Lettuce will last for 2 weeks spinach even longer.

You will save so much money and have far less produce waste if you do this one simple trick! Plus, it just looks pretty, doesn't it?

And because I know someone will ask, no, plastic doesn't work. It's too permeable, so make sure you have glass jars! Big Pickle jars are the best for larger quantities!
And this is what you can do with those lovely strawberries when you want to eat them a week after you bring them home! Strawberry Cheesecake Trifle. The recipe is on my Cooking Blog "Come2mykitchen.com" or with a link in the web address below!

Can you cut the head of lettuce in halves or quarters before putting it in the jar? It's really hard to find small heads.

You're preventing molds and bacteria from other foodstuffs in the fridge, and from the environment whenever you open the door, from reaching your produce. It isn't a hermetic vacuum, but it's isolation. Good idea. We may have to try this.
