DIY Porch Fence & Gate

While visiting our son in California, he asked if there was a way to enclose their front porch with a small fence and entry gate to keep their dog on the porch when leaving their door open to catch the ocean breezes. Dave came up with an easy, diy gate and fence using basic tools and home center lumber, creating an enclosure sturdy enough for a big dog (or toddler, for that matter!), yet lightweight and able be removed if needed.
We've got a materials list and the basic steps outlined for you on our site (plus a video with even more details!), but here are the basics.
Building
The gate is sturdy enough for a large dog, yet easy to build and open.
We started with a simple frame using 2x4s, 1x2s and a 2x2 corner post.
The pickets (made with 1x2s) were notched at the top and spaced about 4 inches apart to create an airy look. The pickets could be spaced closer if needed for smaller animals.
The gates were created from simple 2x4 frames attached with basic hinges.
The finished gate and fence waiting for a paint job.
The enclosure was painted to match the stair rails and now blends seamlessly with the house's entry. Cisco loves his new gated porch. Our site has more detailed instructions.
