    Hi Deborah,

    No matter what method you choose, the first step is to test your popcorn ceiling for asbestos. In some areas it's the law to test anything that could have asbestos. If you do have asbestos, from what I understand, is that they recommend containing it. That means either painting it or covering it with ceiling tile, wood planks or drywall. Please check local regulations before you begin for the health of you and your family. Wishing you the best.

    Assuming there is none (I hope), it is messy and tedious

    And expensive to hire someone to do it. I had popcorn ceilings removed from my main living spaces but left the bedrooms & office with them because of the cost. Although I do lots of DIY I did not have the patience or strength to work overhead for as long as this project requires.
