I want to organize my closet and get rid of clothes and staff that I have had for many years but I don't know what is the best way to start. Thank you so much in advance

Get rid of anything that does not fit, needs more mending than you can easily do, or that just doesn’t fit your lifestyle or is so out of style you will not wear it. Then sort the rest either by type of garments or color or outfits. If you have one or two items in a completely different color range than the rest, consider whether it makes sense or provides a welcome relief, or is something you usually ignore. Then consider whether you might have too many of the same type of item -black pants, tees, socks, etc. Remember you probably only need one or two “dirty work” outfits of scruffy clothes. Also remember that closet pruning is an ongoing or repetitive process, not just once a lifetime. Keep special occasion clothing that still fits even if the need is sporadic. Clothes that are still wearable that you don’t want can be donated or sold. Grubby items should be thrown out or recycled as rags.

If it no longer fits, I haven't worn it in a year or longer or is damaged beyond repair it I get rid of it. A good rule to follow is for every one thing you bring in one thing goes out or is donated.

pull EVERYTHING out. even if you go by category - all shirts, then all pants, etc. This is important. Don't decide what to get rid of. Decide what to keep. Changing this mindset makes a huge difference!

Don't try to make it a days project !!! It took years to collect it all and it can seem overwhelming to try and do it all at once . Tackle a shelf at a time . Then another day do shoes , another day half a for of hanging clothes ...If you haven't wore it in the past year , get rid of it , with the exception of a few dress outfits. Don't hold onto stuff to hope you can fit into it again , lol , or you only wear it when the gift giver is visiting ... Lighten the load !

I start with one item like short sleeved shirts. Try them on, keep what fits and what you like. Put them together in the closet. Then, I move on to the next category as I have time and interest. I get overwhelmed pulling everything out. If it's hard to get motivated, set a timer for 15 minutes and then stop. Put away what you are keeping. Bag up the giveaways and get them out of there. Have a cup of tea, a glass of water. Set the timer and gather your next category. When you get tired, put things away and make sure your space is straightened up. Plan your next time to sort. It isn't a race and I guarantee the more you get done and get rid of, the lighter you will feel.
