I would like to build a 20x20 deck in my backyard? I need to know how to do it and roughly the cost? I am alone and a senior and would enjoy this in my small backyard to put a gazebo or something else on it.....

Thank you!

I just got an estimate for a freestanding deck 12x12 and it was about 500.00 just for the materials-treated pine. I am estimating that it might cost about 750.00-900.00 for a 20x20 deck. If you don't plan on building it yourself you need to check with contractors in your area for a labor cost estimate. Adding a gazebo can vary as you can buy freestanding units at places like Menards for about 400.00 or you can add it into your cost and build it as part of your deck.

I am a senior as well and this is a big undertaking for one person. I would get several estimates for what you want and then decide if I want to do the job. Here are some ideas if you want to try yourself

    Thank you very much!

I don’t know a contractor that is reasonable that would give me an estimate on this dream thing!

    Any ideas or suggestions?

This gives you an idea of what is entailed. You will need at least 2x10 for the joists. Check prices at a lumberyard as well as big box stores. The metal joist hangers are the way to go instead of trying to hammer them together for a deck that size. The other variable is your age and physical condition. I'm 70 and could probably handle this b/c I have all the tools necessary to build a house! LOL My late hubs and I had rental property and did our own repairs, etc. Personally, I would suggest getting a relative or a friend to help. My 75 y o bestie and I have gotten in more trouble with our projects than most people could think of. I watched the video and would not use 4x4 in the ground: rot; freeze/thaw, etc. I like the little concrete "pyramids" to rest the corners on. 2 other things: must level everything and check with Planning and Zoning to see if you need a permit.

  • Hi Donna - These are two articles that show how we took our small and sad deck and turned it into a gorgeous entertainment space complete with a pergola. Hope they help with some inspiration! Hugs, Holly
