Cheryl....Any idea what has caused the hole? Do you have a leak?
Sounds like rotting floor. Suit up and go underneath the house and take a look. See if the hole is caused by a leak or termites.
“Someone” is going to have to see if you have a leak!!!! And yes, this someone is going to have to go under the house.
Could be rotting or termite infested floor joists or could be the foundation is sinking. If you are leery of getting under a sinking house—-If you have an older home the main water pipes could be eroded and leaking which would cause the ground to become unstable. Sinking floors are serious regardless of the cause. One clue before calling anyone is the walk around the house—assuming the ground is not frozen— and note whether the ground feels squishy. Or is the grass much more lush in one particular area? If so step way back and see if you can follow a line of greener or more lush grass. Would it follow a water or sewage line? Is your foundation cracked or do you see evidence of twisted siding or cracks in brick or block? Sunken steps may only be related to burrowing animals. If you see evidence of foundation failure that may be due to water, look for a company that comes out at no cost to review foundation issues and be prepared to answer questions related to what you saw outside. If not, maybe you should call a termite company that inspects for free first. Regardless, I would be leery of using the kitchen. Or the house for that matter. In the worst case scenario you could be on a sink hole which is life threatening.
