Adding a strip of zinc or copper to the ridge of your roof should eliminate the problem.

First you'll want to kill off what's already there. Cheapest/ easiest way is to mix a 50/50 solution of water/bleach. Spray the algae thoroughly and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. Then, rinse it off with plain water. You're better off using a hose, because if you don't know how to use a pressure washer, you can damage your shingles or get water up underneath, etc. *But, be sure that whatever you do use to kill the algae, you first either cover any plants/flowers along the foundation of the house that might get bleach on them once it's rinsed off the roof! If you can't cover them with something, at least hose water all over them before hand to protect them a bit, then rinse them off right after. Once the algae is gone, then adding the strip of zinc/copper to the ridge might help prevent it from coming back. Though I've never understood how that helps with snow buildup vs rain running down the metal strip! But if it works...!!
