What kind of ceiling? If drywall, thumb tacks or a staple gun works well. Thrift stores often have sheer curtains for cheap. Wash them well and they should work great.
I did this in an unfinished basement just using sheets I found on clearance. I tacked the fabric at the corners where the wall and ceiling meet. You can then drape and tack using a staple gun across the ceiling
Or you could use curtain rods and drape them so that they can be washed.
Good point about the washing.
Fabric will collect dust, and absorb doors.
If it is draped from the ceiling, it will be not be easy to try to vacuum.
