A bluing agent is made specifically for brightening whites.

Bleach tends to make whites dingy and breaks down fibers over time. I use 1/3 bottle of hydrogen peroxide when I was my whites. Most oxygen based detergents are peroxide based.

Contains oxygen based bleach (peroxide), sodium carbonate, (baking soda). The rest are inert ingredients. So this means hydrogen peroxide and baking soda would also work and is may be cheaper in the long run.

I use a lid-full of blue Chlorox and 1/2 cup of OxiClean in small load of hot water soak in my top loading washer. I soak the whites in the machine for approximately one hour, then agitate and spin. Then I wash in warm water with my usual detergent. Can't believe how even older whites dazzle now.
