Can I use gel stain to paint a glossy butcher block island?

    If it has a shiny finish, I would sand it down first to remove the finish before staining .

    Yes you can. Just scuff up the surface with a green kitchen scrubby to dull it. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Then apply the stain. Make sure you seal it with three coats of a water based polyurethane.

    You will probably need to sand it down first. But make sure the gel stain is safe for food prep if your planning to use the butcher block for cooking.
