Plan a party. Set a date. The thought of people coming over gets me moving.

You can plan a "White Elephant" party, too. Theme it with "clothes" "kitchen stuff", whatever. Everyone cleans their closets and storage and have a swap meet. Anything that doesn't get swapped goes to a donation box. You get stuff cleaned out, new stuff, friends and food. Less trouble than a yard sale.

Brenda...Once I get started I usually get so involved I don't want to stop. It helps me to get certain items in a place together rather than going to 6 different, drawers, boxes, or totes. I am doing right now and take one closet at a time, tossing out or placing in a box to take to Goodwill or ministry plus put certain items (such as crafting items) together to take to my craft room. Good luck and make it fun....sometimes I hear myself say "that's where I put that"!

I make a list of things I want to complete and break into small tasks that I can complete in less than an hour. That will allow me to do 1 each evening after work, dinner, & clean up. It's easier to stay motivated and get a sense of accomplishment.

As for cleaning out closets, I don't do a big one. I keep a large bag in my closet. I try to go through small sections at a time and toss donate items in there. If something needs repaired or is stained I pull to fix or toss it in the rag bag. When the bag is full, I drop it off at the donation center. You could do a large tote, or multiples, if you want to have a garage sale.

  • Well I can't stand living in a dirty messy house. Best to schedule an appointment with yourself to get the job done. Don't get overwhelmed and work on it one room at a time, an hour at a time - whatever fits into your schedule. On Saturday mornings, I set aside time for seasonal chores. Grab a cup of coffee or tea and dig in! Once you get started and see progress, that will provide further motivation.

  • Hi Brenda - This is one of my favorite articles on cleaning, organizing and decluttering. It really breaks down the steps of the process, and even includes an interview with TV show Hoarders star Matt Paxton. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly
