How do I Paint kitchen cupboards?

I’m painting my kitchen and instead of replacing the cupboards I thought I would paint them. I would like to know what do I have to do, is there a special paint I have to use so it doesn’t chip off, and what’s the steps to do.

Hi Tess, you can see my post below about painting my Mom's kitchen.

Here are the steps we took: After thoroughly cleaning the cabinets we removed the drawers and doors and put them out in her garage (I stuck a piece of tape to the backside of the doors writing door what cabinet they went back to). We hand sanded everything down with fine grit sand paper, just roughing up the surface a tad and then we cleaned them really good one more time.

Then we put two coats of Kilz primer on them and then three coats of white acrylic paint and then three coats of semi gloss polycrylic. Time consuming but not hard to do! Its been four years and there's just one spot where the paint chipped a little bit, otherwise they're easy to clean and still look great!
