How do I eradicate weeds?

5 years ago my husband and I landscaped our front yard. We are in a area that requires us to ration water almost every year, so we layed a double layer of weed cloth before laying rock in a good portion of the yard. The problem is the weeds still came through cloth and have literally taken over. We are getting ready to try this again but need to know the BEST product to treat the soil once we remove everything, and also what to put under the rock to keep it from happening again.

Bring a solution of about 1 cup salt in 2 cups water to a boil. Pour directly on theweeds to kill them. Another equally effective method is to spread salt directly onto the weeds or unwanted grass that come up between patio bricks or blocks. Sprinkle with water or just wait until rain does the job for you.

Today hubby is going outside to spray our walkway (it is rather long). I mix up a gallon of vinegar, 1 cup of salt and 1 tablespoon of Dawn in a backpack sprayer. Doing this today because it is sunny and supposed to reach 80 degrees (that is important because this works best in full sun). We have pets so the week killer has to be natural and nontoxic.

  • Oh Lorraine, you don't. That's not how mother nature works. Weeds are spread by wind, wildlife and people. Weeds didn't come up through the cloth they are on top and easy to pluck out. Since you have such an expanse, I suggest placing white vinegar in a pump sprayer and go to town. Apply liberally and watch the weeds die. Do not use the vinegar where you have plants you want to keep, as vinegar will kill anything.

I live in drought ridden CA and we have water regulation too and it will have stiffer regulations starting in 2020.

landscaping fabric is not appropriate for weed control need thick mil plastic--you don't need to remove it or should not disturb it. the more you disturb soil the more weeds wills grow.

Weeds will grow, period, and it is ongoing, the seeds are spread by the wind so you'll always have them unless you have all concrete(even then they grow in cracks)You do not need to redo it all just spray the gravel/rock to kill the existing weeds.Non-Chemical way------In 2 gallon sprayer mix 1gal.vinegar 1gal.lemon juice 2 cups salt mix well spray in direct full sun this will kill everything even some of the soil so less will regrow. Chemical----Round-up,yes just follow safety instructions(add food coloring so you can see what you are spraying). Then apply preemergent to keep any new weed seeds from sprouting here's best Snapshot 2.5TG Pre-emergent Herbicide - 50 Pound Bag. Or this would work(easiest)----does both kills weeds and is preemergent

you need to buy Martin's Brand TVC(total vegetation control) is a pre or post-emergent herbicide that may be used in non crop areas such as; railroad, ROW's, utility plant sites, tank farms, fence rows, for brush control, seed head suppression in pastures & rangelands & other listed sites. click on "where to buy "to find it where you live https://www.controlsolutionsinc.com/products/tvc/ TVC cannot be used directly around the base of plants like trees or shrubs(with in plants canopy) or water/wet land/water run-off. here is additional info. https://www.domyown.com/tvc-total-vegetation-control-questions-pq-2116.html?sort_questions=datenew Round-Up is actually best choice to clear weeds& you can control what you are spraying/killing easier with it. get concentrate and mix yourself. add food coloring. spray directly onto plant you want to kill, its absorbed thru leaves into stems then root system killing plant it works quick,do not get in wet solution,do not spray in breeze-wind,wear disposable gloves, like I said follow instructions you'll be fine. All herbicides/pesticides are hazardous not just Round-Up. Then use preemergent, when any new weeds/plants sprout that you don't want spray with Round-Up asap. do not let the weeds bloom or get seed heads. All/every garden /yard,gravel areas need constant work, part of being home owner, nothing you do in that area will be maintenance free but it can be low maintenace.
