If you have vacuumed up bugs, especially stink bugs, the pest control guy told me they are trash. Somehow they break up and tiny particles get inside the machine.

Usually you change the bag. Have a bagless Hoover? Empty canister and clean the filters with soapy water. Also, sprinkle baking soda on carpet and vacuum. Baking soda does wonders!

smell is from are you ready?--dead skin cells,dirt,bacteria,pet/human hair and whatever else is on floor stuck in carpets; Canister/no bag--wash the canister and filters out everytime after you empty it,clean roller brush/brushes. Bag /canister-- put some 100 % real essential oils on filters or bag if it has them.I also wash out my vacuum hoses with Dawn dish soap in hot water in tub(mine are plactic/metal). dry everything thoroughly before reuse so gunk does not get stuck inside vacuum. Lightly spray filters with vinegar to kill any smell/mold spores trapped in them.

If you didn’t already know, vacuums breath in one side and out the other. You have to ask yourself, what is my vac smelling and that’s your carpet. If your carpet smells fine, then it’s the micron sized dust particles caught in the vacuums bag. They just won’t come out in the wash. They have to be made soluble by soaking the bag for a few days in a solution of Dawn dish detergent and hot water. The solution must be completely changed each of the three days with fresh solution. Then rinse out completely and hang it in the sun to dry. Hope this helps.
