How do I refinish this piece?
This is a very old children's writing desk with leather inlay lots of bits of trim broken off replaced the knobs a few years ago to clean it up a bit but now think it needs a whole new re haul.

Chalk paint and change the hardware if the piece is not valuable
If you love the piece, and want to give it new life, yes paint it! It's your choice!
Before you refinish, I would suggest trying Howard’s restore a finish. Search Hometalk and YouTube and follow the directions on the can. I have never used it on leather.

I agree with John, do not paint!
have the piece appraised, some antique places will do for free. if the piece is more than a couple hundred, do nothing. leave as is, it might go up in value.
