How do keep birds from taking up residence on our front porch?

Each spring the birds rush to our front porch to begin their nesting.... the birds are very messy and quite territorial, to say the least. I might also mention that we have perfectly fine trees in our yard - that would seemingly make an appropriate home for a bird family. Why do they insist on my front porch??!! I hate that the birds fly at my head every time I use my front door, and did I mention.... the bird poop??.....Ugh!

I don’t have an answer but I would love to no if you find an answer I have the same problem. I have tried hanging a small owl over my lights . That was the only thing that worked but after a few weeks it didn’t work

I bought small (about an inch) mirrors from Hobby Lobby and glued them to fishing line with around 4 spaced several minutes inches apart. Hung on porch. No birds.

I love Pat's answer. We have a ring and my husband watches to yell when they start flying into our door each spring. He looks crazy but it works.

In some areas of the south, the ceiling of the porches are painted pale blue, to replicate the sky. Birds won't nest because it looks like the sky. I saw this work in Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA.

At many garden stores you can buy a plastic owl. The birds will be frightened and remember that the owl owns your porch and will not return. Leave it out there for a week and the birds will be gone for good.
