How can I rid my vegetable garden of carpenter ants without using toxic chemicals? They get underneath the plants and destroy the roots and my plants die.

Something else is killing your plants ; too much water-root rot or fungus from over watering or fungus gnats these will all kill the roots;some other bugs-----ants aerate the soil, digging tunnels that carry water, oxygen, and nutrients to plant roots. And they also speed the decomposition of organic material, such as leaves and dead insects, thereby creating compost & fertilizing the plants.Ants also pollinate many veggies & plants so they will bloom & produce the veggies we like to eat. Carpenter ants only live in wood-trees decking, house etc..a wood-nesting species, the carpenter ant will usually burrow its tunnel only a few feet off the ground, while the rest of the colony may live further up in the host tree. ... There is usually a large “home” nest — most often located outdoors in rotting stumps and trees — and one or more satellite nests. Buy beneficial bugs to combat the ones you do not want in veggie gardens Nematodes are best all organic, this way you can safely eat your veggies https://www.arbico-organics.com/product/2417/beneficial-nematodes-cannabis-applications?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0czB6eve4QIVEsRkCh0IPA0tEAQYASABEgIi6_D_BwE
