How do I use gel from a diaper for the soil?

Here's a great video that explains how to do it, and how it works. I still don't understand though how it actually does work! Seems to me, diapers hold the water but dont release it (which is what you want when they're on a baby!), so I'm still trying to understand how they do release it into the soil! But, they say it works! Post and let us know if you notice a difference!!

This diaper gel thing really works. We have a Lake House that we visit only on the weekends. My flowering baskets are hard to maintain since we are not there during the week days. My neighbor recommended this to my last summer and it worked like a charm.
