Pat: just paint the paneling! I did! (prime first and then paint with two coats of GOOD latex)

Nan...Yes, Pat is so right. Painting paneling is really easy. You can sand rough areas and prime then paint. You can purchase primer in the paint also. Good luck!

Yes, you can. There are products you can find at places like Sherwyn Williams that can be installed over paneling to create a flat surface. It's kind of like wallpaper (but thicker) and installed the same way. I don't know if you can paint it though. We put wallpaper over it. We left the paneling as it was up to chair rail height, then used the stuff on the remaining portion of the wall. We put some molding around at chair rail height to cover the edge and match the paneling after we finished wall papering.

Just paint the paneling. Why make extra work for yourself with wallpaper.

Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Kilz. Then paint like painting regular walls. Acrilyc latex paint will work. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with non shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.
