Depends... If all you want to do is refurbish the clear top coat, do this. Get some Tung oil (semi-gloss) or Tung oil varnish (gloss) and some #000 steel wool. Saturate the steel wool with the oil, and rub with the grain, until the surface is smooth. If you start picking up the stain (color) stop rubbing. Do a section, then wipe with a clean cloth before it sets. Wait 24 hours, and do a second coat according to the directions on the container. Maybe additional coats until you get the build-up you want, but don't do so much that it is sticky when set. Humid weather is not a good time to use Tung oil. The problem with veneer, is that it is glued on. If you use strippers it may come off, or the stain may come up. This is the best I can offer, so if you have deep damaged spots, take it to a restoration shop. If you cannot find Tung oil, or Tung oil Varnish, or if you want some additional color, Watco Danish Oil finish should work.
you could also slightly burn it to have a rustic finish then you just need to applying several layer of varnish. Depending on the color you are looking to get

About the only thing you can do would be paint it. Any kind of refinishing of the veneer would require sanding.
If you want the finish to last you will need to sand. Veneer is too glossy to hold paint well.
