How to choose the right surface for a patio?

Because of your weather, I suggest you dig out the area pretty deeply and put in a base of sand that you pack hard. Lay the pavers close together, sweep more sand between them, and keep weeds out.

Each has its own merits. Pavers may be economical for smaller areas. Stamped concrete is better for larger areas and can be tinted. Pavers can be repaired/removed if any gets damaged, or the area sinks. If you decide on pressed concrete, make sure there are 'breaks' in the pour to prevent cracking.

We have always found that pavers will heave and become uneven. With concrete you don't have that. Just make sure your concrete is 4 inches thick and has reinforcing wire through out. use a good sealer on top of the concrete to add protection. Also when doing a patio, make sure to slope it away from the house for drainage. Stamped and colored concrete is an awesome way to go if done correctly you will have years of low or no maintenance. With any concrete NEVER use salt on it for winter snows & ice. Hope this helps

Stamped concrete can be very pretty, but the nooks and crannies collect dirt and dust in the spring and summer seasons and depending how it is done, may not be barefoot or pet friendly.
