When I had them (from cereal), they got into the tiny holes for adjustable shelves and laid eggs. I had to clean every one out and then fill with wood putty to keep them out of there. I removed everything, threw out any grain items and cleaned the entire area. To prevent in the future, every time I order any grain item I pout it in the deep freeze for a few days which inhibits the hatching (I know gross) and keep everything in air tight containers. When I buy cereal, I transfer to the container immediately and throw the box away. I have heard of eggs hatching from the cardboard container.

They make sticky traps with a pheremone bait for such moths. But before you set them out, you will need to clean out the pantry, remove any containers that might be infested (cardboard, plastic bags, etc.), wash down the surfaces, and make sure that everything you put back in there is in a sealed glass, metal, or plastic container (not bag). And you will need to check when opening things for a while as the pesky critters lay eggs on stuff, too, causing re-infestation if you're not super careful. You might need more than one sticky trap and it will take a few weeks for them all to be gone.

Hate those things! They've gotten me twice, so now I store pretty much everything in glass, metal, or plastic containers - even stuff that is unopened.

Clean out and throw away all items that have moth larvae in them. Wash shelving and put all food on shelves in glass containers. A few bay leaves scattered on the shelves after you finish cleaning will help repel bugs.

  • You have pantry moths. Pain in the neck to get rid of.

This works extremely well and is not toxic to any house pets like bleach and other chemicals will.

Your entire kitchen, yes, even dishes and pots and pans, needs to be emptied, washed then replaced. I had them a few years back. Came in dog kibble. I never ordered dog food on line ever again.

Hi Shirley, We had an infestation of them last year. So frustrating and had to throw everything that wasn’t canned or in a sealed container out and completely clean and wipe every surface. We also bought sticky moth traps. Apparently, they have some kind of pheromone inside that attracts the moths and then they get stuck. We’ve also hung bay leaves in our pantry (my Mom’s advice) and that seems to work. They haven’t been back this year.
