You can plant deer resistant plants. I've read that Irish Spring will keep them away. Human hair spread around will keep them out, you can ask a hair salon for their clippings. My dad put an electric fence up to keep them out of ours.

Hi Jay, plant deer resistant plants like daffodils, foxgloves, and poppies are good choices. They also don't like plants with strong scents like lavender and salvias. I have heard that they shy away from the smell of human hair. so you could try that too.

    For long term protection...

We used cattle panels, definitely more expensive, but a 1 time fix. They need to be two panels high, though. Attach to T Posts with heavy wire. Haven't had any deer problems in years. A lot of work, but oh so satisfying to be able to harvest.

We discovered by dumb luck that the deer stay out of our vegetable garden due to the plantings around it. We built a 3 foot fence when we moved in and decided to see what happened. One side of the garden has large forsythia, hydrangea, and blueberry bushes. The other 3 have small trees. The deer can easily jump the fence so we assume the lack of an easy way out stops them from going in. However they will eat my front and back porch planters down to the dirt.

  • My cousin uses a vegetable peeler on a bar of Irish Spring soap and scatters the shavings around her plants. There's also a product called Bobbex that works really well if you have something that is very precious to you.

I read this from Gma Kirk: A farmer gave me a gross recipe for repellent...but it works. cup or two of urine, tablespoons of crushed garlic, and cayenne pepper, two eggs in a gallon jug, shake well, fill rest of the way with water. Cap and let age a week. Then you drizzle small stream around the perimeter of whatever you want to keep them from eating. Works on rabbits, too
