If you have a tool rental company in your area you may be able to rent one...if not, rake it out, but put what you remove into your compost pile. Some mowers cut fine enough that the thatch doesn't build up... it's actually good for the lawn if not so thick that it smothers it

If thatch is less than 1/2 - inch thick, aerating is a good idea.

    1. Use a thatch rake for thick layers of thatch. ...
    2. Use leaf rakes and a tarp to gather and remove thedead thatch and other material from your lawn. ...
    3. Water the lawn as needed to keep it moist and promote growth.

Leep grass cut to a height not to exceed 3 ". Cut grass regularly.

You can have your lawn professionally dethatched ( it will save your back, if your lawn is large).

Spray your lawn with a mix of whisky or vodka, and a few drops of lemon dish liquid in a 20 gallon hose sprayer. The soap will improve grass roots' ability to grow deeper by improving surface tension issues. The lemon deters bugs, and the alcohol deters fleas and other pests.

I agree - getting a thatch rake would be a good first step. I could use one, too!
