If thatch is less than 1/2 - inch thick, aerating is a good idea.
I removed thatch just last weekend. Use a plastic leaf rake to rake it. I do have a thatch rake but ground was wet and it was digging into it.
Good old fashioned rake!
I have both a metal and a plastic leaf rake and both work well.
Here is a de-thatcher tool. Just be sure the ground had dried a bit from winter or it could rip out the good grass.
