How can I transition two sets of steps?

We are currently building a deck onto the backside of our house. My problem is tying in the existing steps leading to the house (short depth and concrete) with steps going to the wrap-around section which leads to the deck. The first problem is concrete to wood. The second concern is that I don't want the new steps (or the joining of both) to be a trip hazard. Are there any good ways to transition two sets of steps?

Yes. I design decks professionally and I will try to help. I need more information, like dimensions in a sketch.

    Send us pictures please.

Steps have specific Rise and Run parameters, for everyone’s safety.

Deck steps no longer can be totally open risers, they have to be partially closed, for children’s safety.

Decks have specific guardrail and handrail requirements, for everyone’s safety.

I’m guessing you didn’t pull a permit to build this deck, as the Plans Check Process would have revealed this problem and helped you address it in Design Stage. This is the great thing about the permitting process- it finds all flaws in the structural design and all safety flaws, as well as zoning ordinances.

When you sell your house, this addition will be obvious and the City or County or the Buyer may have retroactive requirements.

Thanks for your insight. We have a builder who is taking care of this. Originally we had a ramp designed, but found a problem with it due to a vent. So now we step back and punt. I was hoping for some creative idea and I could share with the builder; I appreciate the fact that they listen to me and encourage my ideas. A handrail, etc. is being discussed as well. If it creates a dangerous situation, we will take the steps out toward another direction.

A photo would help. The old steps could be abandoned in place and covered by the deck. You can demo the old steps.

I don't really want to abandon the original steps. They are concrete and I'm thinking we may have to concrete a pad and maybe tie it all in that way. We just can't have different levels. A photo of the area would be helpful.
