Thank you.....I didn’t. That’s the beauty of Annie Sloan. People who saw it raw....ask me all the time how long it took me to sand. The are in awe when I tell them I didn’t have to cuz of AS, it’s kind of expensive but you use so very little because you brush it on and then brush water over it immediately and it spreads and colors like a dream! IMHO
You can make your own chalk paint by adding plaster of paris with regular wall paint. Once applied to your furniture piece, let it dry, lightly sand off corners and edges to give it the shabby look. Or, just prime, paint, then sand off corners and edges. Choose off white, or pale colors. I would apply wipe on (for ease of application) polyurethane in a satin finish for protection when finished. Enjoy your new piece. Best of luck.
I would clean it very well and lightly sand it with a super fine sand paper and clean it with a tac cloth. I would prime it with a white primer so that your paint will stick and also cover the wood well. Traditional white or an off white will never go out of style, where gray or any other color is trendy and will go out of style. Also white or off white will mix with any other color of furniture, even with woods. I decorate with what is called Industrial/Farmhouse/Country and I have a mixture of Dark Walnut, Off white and white furniture pieces and the trim in my house is white. It all looks great together. Think of Joanna Gaines decorating and that is similar to the style of my home. Everyone who comes into my home raves about it. It has a timeless comfortable style.

You want to paint this China cabinet and hide the detailed veneer work?
I would use a transparent gray stain over it and let the wood patterns show through.
I would make it streaky in some areas, since you’re wanting it shabby.
I would investigate stain and top coat all in one products. It’s essentually tinted polyurethane.
I would put some very different pulls on it. Something with a lot of character.
