You certainly can paint as a temporary solution until you can replace the tiles. Make sure you use something specifically for the job. Either ask at your paint store re what project is best or use a tile painting kit. Don't skimp on the prep. When painting anything that is the most important part.
Don't paint it! My daughter bought a house that had it painted and it's awful to maintain. You have to be careful what cleaners to use on it so you don't remove the paint. Save your money for when you can replace the tiles. Maybe paint your walls to update the space
