How do I protect an old unused map to hang?
I have a map from 1949 which has never been open opened. It there some kind of coating to protect it before framing it and putting it under glass? Sacred heirloom but not expensive per se. Any help out there...much appreciated! Thanks! Sharon

Hi Sharon,
Oh my, I love old things like that. I am afraid my idea is not very brave. I would have to go to a professional artist and ask his/her opinion or just hand over the map and say "Would you please fix my map correctly?" and then I would have to ask have to ask how much it cost. The other idea I have would be to tack it down to a large thin plywood board that had been cut to the map's exact size. I would then make sure all of the wrinkles were out of the map, making it as smooth as possible . Then I would mix up some epoxy, enough to cover the map, and pour it on the map. Make sure it covers the map and runs off all sides of the map. Use a hair dryer to get all the bubbles out. When it is dry, it can be put under glass. It will be pretty. 🌹💖😘
I agree that a professional could definitely help you keep your map protected. Good luck!
I accidentally used one for a project that turned out great and it will last forever now. I had a very old picture frame that was ornate so I set map inside of it and had a small table base. Frame with glass covered it all and it will last forever. That's more of and accidental upcycle though.
I've 'saved' a very old calendar by having it framed professionally in a shadow box, using acid-free products inside the shadow box, and UV-filtering glass. This is a family heirloom, centered around the general store in the small community where all of my family lived in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, because of being framed, we can't touch it but oils from hands harm old paper, so being framed is what will save the calendar.
