How can I cover posts on front porch?

I want to use plastic shutters I got from Lowes to make a nice box around a post on my front porch any ides?
To make the posts bigger or to make a planter?
Posts look better they are just 4 x 4 in front of house. Will try to take picture later today.
How wide are the shutters. Are you going to have to cut down? The rails are usually hollow.

Not sure it will work without looking Jerry-rigged or bulky.
If they are solid you can use them. If the slats are open they will trap rain water and wood posts will rot.
