How to seal bare wood?

I have built several wood 1x2 framing panels which will have screening applied to them to go around my tomato and pepper planter area. I would like to seal the wood to prolong it's life in the outdoors. Is there a homemade mixture that I could prepare myself? I don't want to spend a lot of money. I keep thinking of a paint thinner and oil combination.

Nothing really homemade that will preserve wood. Most "homemade" mixtures require some compounds that still need to be purchased. Nothing in the pantry is sufficient.

I guess that I used the wrong term "homemade". I just thought that I could go to the hardware store and purchase the separate ingredients to mix up my own batch of a brush on type sealer. But thank you William for your response.

Boiled Linseed Oil is a good and food-safe product.

Ditto with Ken it needs food safe because of soil in garden and the veggies. pour Boiled Linseed oil in tub/container to dip/soak them then let drip dry so excess is removed OR A Pure Tung Oil is an all-natural organic finish that is environmentally safe and food safe. For a less expensive alternative for thinning the PureTung Oil, try our Odorless Mineral Spirits.

Does not need to be food safe. Once the finish is dry it won't affect a thing. Best sealant for prolonged outdoors is a marine grade polyurethane. Helmsman Spar Urethane is a good one. Used on wooden parts on boats. Any oil product will leach into the soil, does not dry or harden, and needs to be reapplied every two to three years inside. Outside probably every year.
