  • We have a clipboard with the contents and dates. Add something to the freezer, put it on the list. Use something, cross it off. If big enough, you can use stackable plastic bins to keep things from getting jumbled.

Cardboard boxes are bins that have like items. I use a dry erase board to track my items in the freezer, fridge, and pantry.

We used to have a chest freezer, if memory serves, ours came with 3 metal baskets that you could slide back and forth I would look at the Dollar Store for plastic containers to store meat in one container, bread, etc., in other containers. I remember they are pretty deep which is challenging. Good luck hopefully you will find the exact containers you need, just a thought maybe the Goodwill has " spare parts " from donated freezers, worth looking for.

Date & label what it is--everything you put in freezer so you know when you bought it.I use date bought not expiration date because when you freeze it that all changes exp. date. I do as Naomi says with clipboard but only so I know when I'm down to last 1-2 packs of something,so I can check it to see when I head for store whether to buy if it's on sale. Always add newer items on bottom also rotating from side to side. putting older items on top of newer items on opposite sides. If it is self defrosting you will need to use items with in 6 mos because it draws moisture out. I think "no self defrosting" feature is much better, items can be frozen much longer 1-2 yrs.I do not use boxes, bins ,racks they actually take up much needed freezer space. Boxes can restrict the air flow in the freezer.I take items out of original packages put in zip lock bags(not with actual zipper style/type closer they do not provide long term air control)push food to bottom of bag remove all air then roll it up & seal it,this way everything stacks easliy, uniformly and I can read what is written on each piece(use permanent scripto so writing doesn't come off)sounds like alot but once you get in habit of always doing it it can really save you money on groceries. Especially buying family packs or multiples of meat when on sale thru out year.I split these up into smaller sizes 4 pieces in baggie, easier to defrost/thaw when needed and can thaw out more than one if you need lrg amounts.

I use stackable baskets with handles in mine that I can just lift out. I couldn't find freezer ones so bought household storage ones and so far the plastic has survived fine in my freezer.
