Standard drywall is 8' high and 4' wide. Studs should be 16" centers so you should be able to begin in one corner and hang to the other corner.
It's usual to hang horizontal. Vertical seams tend to pull apart more.
I agree with Kelli, hang it horizontally. Start with the ceiling. Then hang the first wall sheetrock tight to the ceiling sheetrock. Then put the bottom sheet up tight to the top sheet. Any gap extra at the bottom will be covered with floor trim. I wouldn't put it up with nails, I think it's better to screw the sheetrock to the studs.
I always hang vertically. The 4' ends are slightly beveled so taping and mudding will make for a smooth wall. Hanging horizontally you will have butted ends that are almost impossible to tape and mud without a bump at the seams.
