Could be the walls were painted with an oil based alkyd paint and you used a latex acrylic paint over it. Scrape off any loose paint. Sand the edges of left over paint with 220 grit sandpaper to the feather them smooth. Prime with Kilz primer then paint your finish color. Of course you weren't aware of what paint was on the walls originally. I always prime no matter what I paint just to play it safe. Primer is a sealer coat, makes the finish color more true and vibrant.

Thank you William for taking the time and effort to answer my question. I recently moved into the house and like you suspect the latex/acrylic connection. Can I use a paint with primer, or should I use a separate primer and paint?

  • Hi Collette,

Which room are wanting to paint? If the paint is peeling you will need to lightly sand it. Wear a mask in case this is old paint and there is lead in it. Then I would apply a primer like a Kilz then your paint. Depending on the room will determine what paint sheen to use.

Thank you Tiffany. I'm painting the entire inside of the home and am aware of using different sheens for different rooms. Appreciate you taking the time and effort to answer my question. Your answer is very helpful.

I am not fond of the "all in one paints". They really don't have primer in them just more paint solids for a one coat coverage in theory. Not always true. In your situation the the paint on the walls needs to be sealed so the final paint will stick. Use regular primer then your final color.

Thanks for the helpful advice William. I will use a separate primer first, makes sense to me. Appreciate your time and effort.
