Would you consider painting it a neutral color so it would not call attention to itself so much? For example, you could paint it the same shade as your walls, perhaps, if they are done in a soft, neutral color. Then you could add color to the room by placing some bright-colored accessories, such as throw pillows, on furniture that is opposite or a bit of a distance from the fireplace.
You can whitewash it to tone it down or paint it.

Without a picture it a guess. What about whitewashing it. I watched a video where they diluted white paint with water (using different amounts of water for different areas) so the final effect was a white washed stone but different degrees so it looking more natural. Takes a little long but very nice effect.
Change the color and add decor to minimize. Can you change your mantle? That might help as well.
