Hello Lisa! If you have some good DIY skills and the proper tools I wouldn't hesitate installing hardwood floors. You might have some obstacles in your room that may give you a bit of trouble/thinking/problem solving--like doorways and into closets--but it can be done. There are so many resources available to you online for installation questions as well as the store from which you buy your flooring that you should be able to have any questions answered. it will be a job that takes some time to have it look nice unlike DIY shows where they remodel an entire house in 30-60 minutes!
You can rent all the tools you will need as well as sanders to finish the floors. Doing our 1400 sqft main floor took 10 days. Included in time line is removal of furniture; removal of carpet/vinyl;cleaning of underlayment(sweeping/dusting/wiping down);foam or paper underlayment;starting pattern along main wall;measuring/cutting doorways&threshholds;sanding at least 3 times with ever higher grit sandpaper;wiping entire floor and lower wall with tack cloth after each sanding;stain if desired; urethane or varnish;sanding between coats of urethane/varnish;TA DA a gorgeous floor. My husband did ours by himself after work while I was in hospital as a huge surprise for me. 4 Years later I practically cry each time I see the sun sparkle off of the lovely maple. Such a romantic I'm married to!
I would love if I could install a hardwood floor in a half hour show. They usually show the basics. They don't show the OOPS, outtakes, or obstacles they run into. Also they are pros.
