How do I keep snakes away from my house?

My dad swears by moth balls and my sister uses the snake away pellets. Keeping your yard uninviting is my best advice. I live in a wooded area but I've never seen evidence of a snake. We make sure we keep it weeded, grass cut, and not any hiding places.

An old wives tale says to put a rope around your house close to the foundation. Supposedly, the snakes think it's another snake and won't cross over it. Note: it can't be a skinny little vinyl rope. It has to be one of those thick braided jute ropes.

Rid your property of tall grass/weeds, grass seed, bird seed, etc. Remove wood piles, rock piles, heavy vegetation providing hiding places (ivy, evergreen ground covers, etc.). If rodents are attracting snakes, set traps as needed. Spray the area with clove oil, peppermint oil, garlic sprays. Remove any animal feces, tires in yard, etc.

Repair broken siding, remove lint from outside dryer vent area. Trim lower half of shrubs providing potential hiding places. Check foundation, soffits, etc. for holes and fill. Rodents can enter via a space as small as a dime.

OMG! So sorry that natures creatures are trying to habitat in your space. A place for everything but NOT in my yard.

It took two yrs before I felt comfortable enough to care for my yard when I moved temporary to the Vancouver, Canada area. No snakes! Coming from AR I was a scared to death of them.....

Unless poisonous, you want snakes as they eat bugs and rodents. You can install snake fencing too. Learn about snakes so you are no longer afraid of them.

There are a lot of good snakes around. You might try sprinkling lime around your shed.
