Does wax sealer on chalk paint rub off and stain upholstery?

We are finished painting two wooden chair frames with two coats of pale grey Valspar chalk paint. We want to seal them but are concerned that wax sealers will rub off and stain the white cushions that will go on the chair frames. We tried Minwax Polycrylic sealer and it left yellow streaks on the chalk paint. So we started over with a light sanding, cleaning and two new coats of chalk paint. Very hesitant on applying any kind of sealer after all of this work and expense. Any advise on a wax that won’t discolor or rub off onto our newly and expensively upholstered white cushions? Thanks!

Once the wax cures and reaches its hardest state it will not rub off. It will feel like a poly finish when it has cured all the way. When applying your wax--apply it in several thin coats--buffing very well in between. You will know that you have buffed enough by feeling a shiny smooth finish that has no drag to it. I use garage towels from a box. I think they make the best buffers.

you needed to prime/seal the wood first as the polycrylic and some other sealers will pull tanins from wood and could

cause white to go orange or yellow.chalk paint doesn't seal it is why the tannins bled thru.Tannins exist in many woods, most notably...Mahogany gets star status for bleeding red or pink tannin. Knotted pine, cedar and redwood and can bleed through to the surface, leaving a yellowish-brown stain on the surface. These stains are more noticeable on lighter paintcolors. ... Prime the stained area with a top-quality, stain-blocking wood primer. Seal the stains with shellac or shellac based primer or an alkyd/oil primer, a coating designed to trap these tannins. Also the wax will be needed to reapplied especially if using chalk paint & wax on high use/traffic furniture.using chalk paint outside. Can you? Yes! It is as durable outside as it is inside. The only difference? The top coat finish. You clean and prep the same. Paint the same. However, you can not use a wax to seal it for outside use, which if you think about it makes sense. Wax melts in the heat-----7 ways to seal it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnMTAh2c0e0

Hi PK, you can use a matte spray on designed to seal chalk paint, it is not a wax base so it will seal without risk of transferring to cloth material.

Chalk Paint Clear Topcoat Chalked Ultra Matte Paint creates a matte finish that dries to a velvety smooth finish. It transforms and rejuvenates furniture and home decor, creating a unique one of a kind look.

In future projects stay away from the chalk paint. All this trouble and you could have just used enamel . Will not rub off, no wax needed!
