Does wax sealer on chalk paint rub off and stain upholstery?

We are finished painting two wooden chair frames with two coats of pale grey Valspar chalk paint. We want to seal them but are concerned that wax sealers will rub off and stain the white cushions that will go on the chair frames. We tried Minwax Polycrylic sealer and it left yellow streaks on the chalk paint. So we started over with a light sanding, cleaning and two new coats of chalk paint. Very hesitant on applying any kind of sealer after all of this work and expense. Any advise on a wax that won’t discolor or rub off onto our newly and expensively upholstered white cushions? Thanks!

Once the wax cures and reaches its hardest state it will not rub off. It will feel like a poly finish when it has cured all the way. When applying your wax--apply it in several thin coats--buffing very well in between. You will know that you have buffed enough by feeling a shiny smooth finish that has no drag to it. I use garage towels from a box. I think they make the best buffers.

Hi PK, you can use a matte spray on designed to seal chalk paint, it is not a wax base so it will seal without risk of transferring to cloth material.

In future projects stay away from the chalk paint. All this trouble and you could have just used enamel . Will not rub off, no wax needed!
