How to get rid of vines, weeds, and saplings in my mulch beds?

I have used Round up and Ground Clear neither work. There is a 1/2 acre of bedding and there are virtually 1000's of them, too many to pull or dig. Most of them are pine tree saplings about 4 to 5 inches high. I have many over 50 foot trees and lots of azaleas and other ornamental shrubbery under the trees. I use pine straw and hard wood mulch but we are talkjing 15 yards and 100 bales

We have a neighbor whose plum tree branches drop plums every year. The following year means hundred of little plum trees. We found the easiest thing was to go thru with a hedge hog and cut them down. I go behind my hubby who cuts them and paint each freshly but tree with Roundup. Works better when applied to a fresh cut.

Kelli had a good suggestion about talking to a local nursery. Another suggestion is to talk to your local Cooperative. If Roundup is not working, there really isn't anything stronger. My thought would be to break it down into smaller sections and focus on one section at a time. You may have to use several different methods per section, including, digging them out, cutting them down and painting the cut with Roundup, and covering the section with newspaper or black plastic to keep the light out that is fueling the growth. Of course, some of these methods will most likely damage the shrubbery so be careful if you want to keep those. I would say that this is going to be a battle that will take more than one season. :( Wishing you the best.
I have used something called brush killer on things like this and it worked. Sometimes you need to do a second application in thicker areas.
