There are 2 solutions or approaches Kathy, that come to my mind. First is prevention, second is distraction. You need to put something on the surface of the post to prevent them from being able to climb it. The prevention could be something as simple as a clear grease or vaseline that is thick OR metallic. You might consider getting an expensive sheet of metal from the home improvement and wrap the post to prevent them from being able to climb it. It needs to be very smooth and thick enough they cannot tear it. Then the second part of the strategy is to put an old hub cap or any shallow container off to the side of your yard with sunflower seeds or even bird seed to give them a treat. Maybe set it on the corner of a wall or on a stump where it is off the ground. They will opt for the easy food and leave your 4 x 4 post alone. Both of these applied may be all that is needed to prevent the squirrels from climbing your post.

Hi Kathy, My husband bought several pieces of flashing at a Lowes Home Improvement store and nailed them all the way up the 4x4. However if the 4x4 you are using is visible or is a part of your house you may not want to do that. The vaseline idea would be best. Just remember to keep reapplying it because it does wear off and dry out. PS If you use the flashing, be aware that it does reflect the sun just in case that bothers you.

Make a baffle attached to the post to prevent them from climbing up. Stove pipe, cone shaped sheet metal, 6" PVC pipe slipped over the post.
