Hi Laurie, Use a yard brush or plastic rake!
My husband and his brother had a carpet business for many years. He tells me the worst enemy of carpet is dirt. Keep it vacuumed and shampooed often. That is the best way to keep it restored. You might consider a throw rug at the entrance of the front and back etc. Just a thought to help, I hope it does.
