How much should framing a basement into rooms cost?

I moved into this new house with my sick wife who has now died. The unfinished basement under this single-family one-story home calls for me to finish, but at 82, I need some help framing. What should the 2x4s, the many nails, guns, and so on cost (minus the plumbing) to frame up two bedrooms, a kitchen and a full bath? The outside walls are already framed and insulated--and they need wallboard. (Once framed I can do 90% or more of the electrical work, a fairly easy task for one man.) Beyond that I am looking at bead board, barn board, for much of the walls and ceiling, and some creating flooring.

  • You might consider stopping by your local home improvement store and gathering prices for the items you’ll need including tool rental, delivery, labor if needed, then tally everything up based on your plans.

Hello Joris! Maybe you might consider hiring a contractor to do the framing for you. You can get an estimate from several contractors and choose what works for you. Ask friends, neighbors and family if they know a contractor/handyman that might be interested. You won't have to worry about how many 2x4's you need, haul construction material up and down stairs, buy nail guns and nails, and the framing will probably get done faster. It's hard to give you an estimate because we can't see exactly what you need to have done but a contractor who can visit your home can give you a much better estimate. Perhaps there will be a way that you can still do part of the work yourself or as a helper. As long as you feel you can do the rest of the work yourself you will have a good foundation to finish your basement. Best wishes to you.

  • I'd recommend you get a couple of different bids from contractors that you have heard good things about. Word of mouth from people that have actually hired them is the best way to go.
