Soak towels, cotton balls, or paper towels in white cleaning vinegar. Lay the soaked medium on the caulking. Let sit at least an hour. You might have to repeat.
Replace it! Yup, I'd completely remove the caulking, clean the area with bleach, let dry, apply new caulking formulated for bathrooms. Better safe than sorry. Best of luck.
Hi Barbara,
The first step is to figure out why there is mold. Is it just coming from damp caulk or is it coming from the wall behind the shower? If it's just from the caulk, replacing it will work just use waterproof caulk. In the future, use vinegar & water or hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle to clean grout and kill germs. If it's coming from actual shower walls, those may have to be replaced, as well as the tiles. Check to see if the grout is cracked. If it's cracked and has mold, the mold might be getting through to the walls. I'd try cleaning it first, and dig out any old caulk. Check under that caulk to see if there is more mold. If not, replace the caulk and you're good to go. Wishing you the best.
