What not to do when putting in a kitchen island and sink?

We're going to redo our kitchen and put in an island with a sink, slide in stove and dishwasher in it. Any ideas or suggestions of things "not to do" or things "we should do" would be greatly appreciated!

  • Wow! That sounds awesome! Make sure you have enough counter space for prep and serving. You will also need a pop up vent instead of a traditional hood vent for the stove. Rework your lighting plan to include light over the island. Both task and ambience lighting. And don't forget to install outlets in the island itself. I was just visiting my girlfriend in Asheville, NC and she has a 12' island, (her kitchen is enormous), and they installed outlets on each end. They wish they had installed more. We were in the kitchen cooking, baking and making food for an impromptu Cinco de Mayo dinner and with the blender, food processor and mixers, it would have been handy to have additional outlets.

Put electrical outlets on at least each end of the island so that you can plug in things in more than one spot on your island. If possible put in a downdraft stove that vents to the outside and you won't have a have a vent overhead. We had a Jenn-air in our last home that was downdraft and had removable top pieces-a griddle or grill could be switched out for 2 cooking eyes, etc. This was my favorite stove ever. If you do a lot of cooking, I would check one out. If you are having the island custom built, put in extra deep drawers instead of all shallow ones. These can hold your crockpots and small appliances. We also had a pop-up stand for our heavy mixer. A pullout trash can is also nice. Make your island as large as you have room for not just the length, but also make the top as wide as you can. You can put barstools on the other side, but more than that you will have a lot of extra workspace. I'm sure that you won't have room for all of these, but maybe this will help you think about what you want most.

    Enjoy your new island.
