Lynette...If it is fire ants I hate to say we have found nothing, however, gasoline will move them but usually elsewhere and you can definitely expect your grass to die. We bought a product from the Farmers Co-op, I can not remember the name, but it worked for a while but then just stopped. If you have one in your area you might call and ask what they recommend and maybe it will work for you in your area. Good luck!
You can't. All you can do is deal with them when you find a hill. I use presweetened cornbread and muffin mix generously sprinkled on the hill. The take it into the nest because of the sweet and die because of the cornmeal that they can't digest. Larger hills and larger ants will take more applications just because of the size of the mounds and the larger populations. Normal smaller hills should only take one to two applications. You will know they are gone when there is no more activity when the hill is disturbed.
When I find the mounds, I pour boiling water in the center and it kills them. However, I have some in spots that could be dangerous to try & carry the water so last week I bought Sevin. Sprinkle 1 cup on the mound and sprinkle a bit of water, they are gone the next day. I sprinkled it Saturday before it rained and they were all dead Sunday. Also found a bunch of carpenter ants around some stones I had stockpiled, sprinkled on them and they were dead in less than an hour.
Hello. I favor both indoor and outdoor traps using the homes perimeter as well as moist shady areas that notably have ant activity or mounds in view.
I like the ease of a commercial ant trap— both indoors and outdoors. The Terro brand that I have used with great sucess with -is recommended quite highly. You can check out the reviews and Q&A here— to see if it would meet your needs. I recently set them up a few weeks ago and —problem is once again —solved.
Once you get these traps in place the ant problem is distant memory. They are very effortless, effective and cost-effective. They do not smell badly like an ant aerosol spray does.
I sometimes also use Terro outdoor versions— outside around the foundation perimeter as the ants can be seen under rocks and in my seasonal flowering planters, the do like shade and moisture.
