If they are unfinished, you shouldn't have to do much more than make sure they are clean, Peggy.
As Ann said, if they are new, raw pine, you don't need to do anything to the boards. To make the wash use a white paint (I like a non-latex one like Annie Sloan Chalk Paint or powdered milk paint) and dilute it until it is watery and thin. Brush it or roll it on and wipe it back and you are good to go. Have fun!
