How to air-layer juniper?

When air-layering a juniper branch, should you remove all but a couple of the green leaves. Is there any rule of thumb about the thickness of the branch to be air-layered? I've heard minimum, diameter of a pencil, but how thick can you go 2" or more? Thanks.

Thanks, Lynn. I'm doing a couple branches, about 1/2" to 3/4". Will wait three months, see how it's doing. Appreciate your help.
