Yes you can paint it, but you will need to seal it after you paint it. Some people like to do a marble look, or granite, or slate by using sponge painting techniques. They sell non-yellowing polyurethane now which works well for this project. Here are some ideas I found for you but there are more if you click on "explore projects" then "paint" then "counters" to find the technique you might like.
