Hi Lorraine! Your question posted twice. I recommended inserts.

A plumber can run a gas line for gas and add the shut off valve. To do electric, an insert may work best.

  • We converted our wood fireplace to gas and we love it. We needed a plumber to run a gas line and we needed a permit from our town for the gas work, to ensure it was done properly. We bought a log set that turns on and off with a battery remote, so no electrical needed. We also had the chimney inspected for safety.

Not something a novice can do safetly -- check with your local fireplace shop for pricing. Need to bring in a gas line and you will have to purchase a nice real-looking log set (mine cost me nearly $600 -- but looks fabulously realistic and throws a lovely heat!) -
